Flowers from vegetables

I grow scallions from rooted ends of the ones I buy in hte store… but the Hort Lady has other goals for her store bought alliums and other vegetables

Just for fun – ordinary produce from the grocery store will grow a flower. Most garden vegetables are bienuals, they are harvested before they flower. The below picture is an allium flower grown from a regular white onion rooted in some water than planted in my flower garden in the spring.

Keep in mind the water from the rooting process will give off a stinky onion smell, I rooted mine in my greenhouse. The onion water can be used as a bug spray for your plants if you like.

I have been told a red onion will produce a pink flower. (Next year’s experiment) I have also directly planted whole carrots which product a Queen Anne’s Lace flowers.
